Sleep Assessment - Late Night Snacks

Are late night snacks going to make me sleep better?

Some foods, like tart cherries, have been shown to have healthy sleep benefits, but other fruits and low calorie snacks can also be ok for late night snacks. Keep in mind you metabolize at a slower rate while you’re sleeping so heavier snacks are a no no. The same way we aspire to have a consistent sleep schedule, it’s best to consume your meals at consistent times as well, avoiding those heavier late night snacks.

What I didn't know I didn't know about mattresses.

What I didn't know I didn't know about mattresses.

Had you asked me 10 days ago what makes a good mattress my answer would have been that if it's comfortable it's got to be a good one right? I mean I knew that sleeping, however good or bad, affected how you feel when you're awake. As a reluctant member of the "Can't Sleep" club I figured that the issues keeping me up at night were out of my control. Little did I know 10 days ago just how in control a person can actually be when it comes to setting themselves up for a restful, rejuvenating night's rest.

What I've learned so far while becoming a sleep specialist is that comfort is really important, but that true comfort is the sum of all the ways your mattress should be working for you. Like 80% of Americans, I deal with lower back pain and getting a bad night's sleep only exasperates the level and length of discomfort. I need a bed that gives me added support not only for my back but my knees, hips and shoulders too. I'm a part of the 57% of Americans who struggle with sometimes feeling too hot when falling asleep leading to waking up throughout the night to dance a nightmarish Hokey Pokey, sticking one leg out from under the covers only to wake up again to pull it back in. My ideal bed is going to keep me cool so my sleep stays dance-free allowing me sleep deeper for longer. Finally, according to SleepFoundation.Org over 90% of people believe a comfortable mattress is very important to getting a good night's rest, and I agree, I want my bed to feel good!

But can a mattress provide lumbar and pressure relieving support for the whole body? Can a supportive mattress also keep me cool all night? Can a mattress that does both really be comfortable? What I didn't know 10 days ago is that yes, a mattress can provide you with those benefits. Not only that it can, but that it should.

Since were going to spend 1/3rd of our lives in bed we should make sure that our mattresses are serving a higher purpose than just being a place to lay down. They can and should be helping you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer and helping your body and mind achieve the rest it needs to be restorative and rejuvenating. You don't need to take your sleep for granted when something as simple as the right mattress tonight can start helping you tomorrow. Im excited to take what I've learned in the past 10 days and beyond and turn it into helping everyday people take bedtime from something to dread to something to look forward too.

What makes a mattress good?

Several factors contribute to making a mattress good. Here are some key aspects to consider:

1. Comfort: A good mattress should provide comfort and support for your body. It should have the right balance of firmness or softness to accommodate your preferred sleep position and provide pressure relief for different body parts.

2. Support: A mattress should offer proper support to align your spine and maintain neutral body posture. It should distribute your body weight evenly, ensuring that no specific areas are subjected to excessive pressure.

3. Durability: A good mattress should be durable and able to withstand regular use over an extended period. It should maintain its shape and support without sagging or developing permanent indentations.

4. Motion Isolation: If you share your bed with a partner, a good mattress should minimize motion transfer. This means that when one person moves or gets out of bed, the other person should not be disturbed by the movement.

5. Temperature Regulation: A quality mattress should promote airflow and prevent heat buildup, ensuring a comfortable sleep temperature throughout the night. Look for mattresses with breathable materials or cooling technologies.

6. Allergen Resistance: If you have allergies or sensitivities, consider a mattress that is hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, mold, and other allergens. This can help improve your overall sleep quality and reduce potential allergic reactions.

7. Edge Support: A good mattress should provide consistent support, even at the edges. Strong edge support allows you to utilize the full surface of the mattress without feeling like you might roll off.

8. Personal Preferences: Ultimately, what makes a mattress good is subjective. Your personal preferences, such as mattress size, material, and specific features like adjustable firmness or memory foam, play a significant role in determining the right mattress for you.

It's important to try out different mattresses and consider factors like warranty, return policy, and customer reviews to make an informed decision and find a mattress that meets your specific needs and preferences.

  6. Brand Values: Some customers may prioritize brands that align with their values, such as environmental sustainability, social responsibility, or ethical manufacturing practices. It's important to note that what makes a mattress brand "the best" can vary depending on individual preferences, needs, and budgets. It's recommended to research and compare multiple mattress brands, meet with a Sleep Specialist, and try out mattresses in person to determine which one is the best fit for you and the way you get to sleep.
